JDC Demolition was awarded the contract by Turner Construction Company and Boston Properties to perform the complete demolition of the an existing 125,000 SF 4-story, steel former office building which housed MIT’s former book store, cafeteria, and Google Office space.  This project had numerous logistical challenges being that the building was located in the middle of Cambridge’s very populated Kendall Square, having a MBTA train station connected to the building at the East, the building being attached to a parking garage to the North, and the building being attached to an active Google Office Building to the West.  The building also shared a loading dock with the adjacent Marriott Hotel which also stayed active during the demolition process.  JDC coordinated all protection of these adjacent structures with Turner Construction to allow the building to be safely demolished with these active structures only feet away from the demolition area.  For this project, JDC partner with its sister company, New Roads Environmental, to perform the asbestos abatement and hazardous materials removal.  JDC’s scope include the physical separation all structures and complete demolition of the building while protecting the perimeter foundation walls which were reused as part of the new construction.  This project had a very aggressive schedule.  JDC was able to complete this project on time and safely by working extended hours and weekends.
