JDC was contracted by John Moriarty and Associated and Leggett McCall Properties to be the abatement and demolition contractor for this high profile Cambridge Courthouse Redevelopment in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Currently the tallest building in Cambridge, JDC’s scope included the abatement and complete interior demolition of the former 24-story concrete, 350,000 SF structure which housed courtrooms, judge cambers, parking areas, mechanical rooms, and 4 stories of Middlesex County of Corrections jail cells at floors 20-24. Due to the wide spread contamination of asbestos spray on fire proofing within the buildings, the entire interior of the structure was removed as asbestos containing waste materials. JDC was also responsible for removal of all exterior precast concrete panels, structural demolition/removal of the roof and top 2 levels of the existing building, removal of all elevators, removal of stairs, removal of concrete and steel framing for new building configuration, removal of mechanical equipment, and site demolition. Major challenges to this project include devising a system to remove the precast panels from a bottom up approach rather than a traditional bottom down approach due to the aggressive project schedule and sequencing of the new glass curtain wall while trying to contain the asbestos spray-on fireproofing behind the panels. JDC worked with Peri Form Work Systems to design an exterior containment system that could climb the building floor by floor in lieu of a traditional bottom up scaffolding approach.
